Indian Stratigraphy
Have you ever driven on the highway and noticed layers of rock striping the walls on the side of the road? These layers of rock are known as ”strata”, and they go back millions of years. As new deposits of rock, dust, and debris pile up, they push the rocks below downward. Stratigraphy is the branch of geology that deals with the study of these strata and how they are layered.
Geologists use two different tools within the world of stratigraphy: relative dating and absolute dating. Imagine you found a fossil within the rock layers on the side of the highway. Relative dating would not seek to determine the age of the fossil. Rather, it would estimate whether the fossil is younger or older than other things found near the site. Absolute dating, on the other hand, would use more exact techniques (for example, assessing the decay of radioactive isotopes within the fossil) to determine the fossil’s exact age. When these two methods are combined, geologists can begin to map the history of life and rock across an entire country or continent.
